Endless Forms Most Beau-toe-ful: Evolution of the Human Hallux
نویسنده
چکیده
Zachary Throckmorton Lincoln Memorial University-DeBusk College of Osteopathic Medicine Department of Anatomy Abstract Background. The adduction of the first pedal ray in humans, such that the hallux is incapable of functional opposability, is a major feature of the evolution of the hominin foot (e.g. Darwin 1872, Haeckel 1879, Latimer and Lovejoy 1990). While hallucal adduction facilitates obligate bipedalism, it inhibits but does not eliminate arboreal grasping ability. The angle of the hallux (as determined by the longitudinal axis of the first metatarsal) relative to the rest of the foot (as determined by the longitudinal axis of the second metatarsal) is a product of both hardand softtissues. Given the failure of soft tissue to fossilize, direct evidence for hallucal angle evolution is scanty, and consensus has not emerged as to when and how the modern human condition of hallucal non-opposability evolved.

Hallux valgus is 3 times more common in females that may cause uncomfortable deformity of foot , problem with wearing unsuitable and narrow-toed box shoes and pain on the inside of the big toe over the metatarsal joint , therefore patients...

Received: 25 Aug, 2015 Accepted: 26 Oct , 2015 Abstract Except for the hallux, the human toes classically present three phalanges. There have been numerous papers in regard to incidence of biphalangism in different countries. The most common site of biphalangism is in the fifth toe and its incidence declines in the second to fourth toe. Hence biphalangism of second to forth toe is rare, t...

Objective: Hallux Valgus is one of the most foot deformities which increase plantar pressure beneath big toe and first metatarsal. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of foot orthosis on plantar pressure distribution in subjects with mild and moderate Hallux Valgus. Materials & Methods: in this quasi-experimental study, females 16 with Hallux Valgus were recruited. Plantar pressur...
متن کاملAre Toe Weakness and Deformity Associated with Falls in Older People?
INTRODUCTION Hallux valgus and lesser toe deformities are highly prevalent foot problems in older adults, affecting up to 74% of this population. One suggested cause of these toe deformities is inadequate strength of the intrinsic flexor muscles of the toes [1]. Adequate toe flexor strength is essential to control body weight shifts, propel the body during gait and assist in shock absorption du...
متن کاملEpidemiology of Shoe Wearing Patterns Over Time in Older Women: Associations With Foot Pain and Hallux Valgus
BACKGROUND Foot problems are prevalent in older women and are thought to be associated with footwear. This study examined women's shoe wearing patterns over time and evaluated associations between footwear characteristics and foot pain and hallux valgus. METHODS Women aged 50-89 years (n = 2,627) completed a survey that included drawings of four toe-box shapes and four heel heights. For each ...
